Four places worth putting a board in the water, from the beginner-proof to the one that will keep a strong paddler busy all morning. All four are on the island map.
Beginner · best at dawn. Flat, sheltered and shallow a long way out, with nothing to hit. Go before about nine in the morning and the water is usually glass; by mid afternoon the breeze has normally put a chop on it. The easiest first hour on a board you will get anywhere in the Caribbean.
Beginner to intermediate · calm all day. The huge protected lagoon in the middle of the island barely moves, whatever the wind is doing outside it. Paddling the mangrove edges is the best wildlife you will see from a board here: juvenile fish, rays and the occasional young shark in water a metre deep.
Beginner · a proper day out. Shallow, warm and sheltered a very long way from shore, on the quiet north side. It is an hour’s drive around the Sound, so make a day of it rather than an hour. Look at the starfish from the board and leave them where they are.
Intermediate · nobody around. Undeveloped coastline at the north-west corner, with sand tracks, mangroves and almost no people. More exposed than the rest of the west coast, so check the wind first — but on a still day it is the emptiest water on Grand Cayman.
Paddle out kneeling until the board feels settled, then stand one foot at a time with the paddle blade in the water for balance. Almost everybody who falls in the first ten minutes stood up too early and looked down at their feet.
Eyes on the horizon, feet either side of the carry handle, knees soft. A stand up paddle board is far more stable than it looks, and it gets less stable the moment you stare at the deck.
Go out against the breeze while you are fresh so it pushes you home when you are tired. On the west coast that usually means heading south first, then turning back.
The leash keeps the board with you if you come off, which matters more than it sounds when there is a breeze. It is hotter out there than it feels, and there is no shade on the water.
Paddleboarding rewards flat water, and Grand Cayman produces a lot of it. The trick is knowing when and where — the same spot can be mirror-flat at seven in the morning and choppy by eleven.
This is the one. The wind is usually still asleep, the water is clear enough to watch the bottom scroll past under the board, and you have the length of the beach to yourself. If you only paddle once while you are here, make it an early one.
A small sheltered cove just south of George Town, tucked in enough that it stays calm when the open coast will not. It is a short paddle in a confined space rather than a long cruise, which makes it a good place to find your balance before taking a board somewhere bigger.
Shallow, protected and enormous. You can stand in most of it, which takes the anxiety out of falling off, and the mangrove edges give you something to explore rather than just a straight line to paddle.
The wind builds through the morning almost every day. If you are heading out after lunch, pick somewhere sheltered rather than the open west coast, and start your paddle heading into the wind so the tired half of the trip is the one being pushed home.

For most people, no. Hard boards feel slightly more rigid underfoot and inflatables are more forgiving if you knock them against something. Both are stable enough for a first-timer. Tell us where you are staying and we will bring whichever suits the spot.
Not at all. Most people are upright within ten minutes on flat water. Start on your knees, get a feel for the board, and stand once it stops wobbling. Calm morning water makes the whole thing much easier.
